One night this past weekend I was cruising in the Taxi and as a car passed me something strange happened.

My entire windshield turned to a gunky Yellow Mess.

It took me a solid 4 seconds to figure out that the car that passed had slammed eggs on my windshield.

Being I am a Dumb ass I decided to give chase and wipped a kind of Power slide U- turn and took off after them.

My delayed thinking had given them a decent start but, I do have 4.6 liters of Furry under the hood I soon had them back in my sights.

At this point they see I am after them and start running. Driving wildly taking turns with abandon. By the time we got to the 3rd turn in the chase the suspects took a left going too fast and TC`d into a parked car. LMAO!

I immediately stopped pulled a 3 point turn and drove away laughing.

I pulled into a dark lot and Cleaned the windshield with....Diet Mountain dew and continued my night smiling gleefully.

I wonder what MOM said to them when they brought the car home all dinged up? _________________________

I received the following communication today from the Boston Police hackney carriage unit. It seems the Federal law suit filed by taxi owners over the requirement that all new cabs be hybrids has resulted an injunction by the federal court. The Police now state that you can buy a LWB Crown Victoria if it is brand new and factory white. Since you can`t buy one unless it is a fleet vehicle (anyone know how many qualify as a fleet?) and a brand new one is actually more then a camry hybrid I don`t think you will see any of us buying them. All a nice thought anyway I guess.

You guys have all heard me talk about the hybrid requirement for cabs here in Boston. I don`t think I have ever mentioned it but the entire thing got started up by this annoying architect character John W. Moore. The guy admits he never before had any contact with the taxi business before he woke up one day and decided he would make it his life`s mission to get us to drive hybrids. Here is his latest offering to http://boston.com and my response.

THOUGH I admire Mayor Menino’s efforts to jump-start the conversion of Boston’s aging fleet of old Crown Victorias to new efficient hybrids, in the end a mandate will not be necessary to achieve this laudable goal. Consider these facts:

1) Over the past five to seven years, hybrid cabs have been proven in other US cities, and their numbers are growing rapidly.

2) Boston’s biggest and most successful cab owner, Boston Cab, has been converting its fleet for the last three years and plans to order 100 more hybrids this fall.

3) Hybrids are incredibly efficient when driven in the city and as cabs, for which stop and go and idling are commonplace. Hybrids save 60 to 70 percent on fuel over the old Crown Victorias and the emissions savings are even greater.

These huge savings benefit drivers, passengers, and the public at large. This is why the Public Health Commission supports the conversion to hybrids. Boston cabdrivers (those who pay for gas) overwhelmingly prefer to drive hybrids. It’s too bad a few owners who lease out their vehicles (and do not pay for gas) spend their money on a lawsuit rather than buy a new hybrid for their drivers. The smart move is to follow the leaders in the industry and save big on fuel, emissions, and money.

My Response
As usual Mr. Moore only knows part of the story but feels the need to give his opinion as if it were fact. While I appreciate his concern for the environment we in the taxi industry have come to think of him as an angry little kid burning ants with a magnifying glass.

The gas savings figures Mr. Moore offers both in gallons and money are to say the least overstated. The hybrid taxis I have driven used roughly 60% of the gas I would have burned through when driving a Ford Crown Victoria. Mr. Moore also refuses to acknowledge now or when I have spoken to him in the past that taxi owners who have converted to hybrids have passed that conversion cost fully onto the backs of the men and women who rent their cabs. Taxi owners are now allowed to charge $18.00 extra per shift to the driver and most if not all force drivers to purchase a collision damage waiver for an addition $5.00 per shift completely offsetting any savings in gas to the driver. Further most of the hybrids that have been deployed as Boston Taxis lack the luggage space and seating capacity of a Ford Crown Victoria. I can honestly say that the nights I drove a hybrid it cost me a few trips because I was unable to accommodate the needs of the passengers.

Mr. Moore goes onto laud the Tutunjian family (owners of Boston Cab) for aggressively purchasing as many hybrids as they can. What Mr. Moore again leaves out is the dollars and cents Sir do you understand the buying power a fleet owner with 300 cabs has VS. a single cab owner or a man who merely leases a medallion? You are comparing a man with 300 taxis millions of dollars in real estate and a vineyard in South America with a man like myself who rents a medallion an apartment. Mr. Moore goes on to champion the Tutnjian family for the 100 more hybrids they will place into service this coming fall. Sir do you have any concept what this has done to the price of a hybrid? Toyota only manufactures so many and an even smaller number are shipped to Massachusetts, I invite you sir go try and buy one and get it this week. You simply can`t Tutunjian has them all already. Mr. Moore further ignores the money aspect by neglecting to mention that taxi insurance when deploying a hybrid is roughly $9,000 a year and large fleets like Boston Cab are reportedly self insured. I ask you again sir,as I asked you in person last summer,Where do we get the money?

The smart move sir would be for you to stick to placing windmills on ski chalets for the ultra rich and put away that magnifying glass... you have burned this ant to a crisp with your elitist meddling.

On a cold March morning in 1776 the British army and subjects loyal to king George III awoke to find the Rebel Army had posted a giant eviction notice ,in the form of rebel Cannon , high atop Dorchester heights in South Boston. After a short game of chicken with the royal forces threatening to burn Boston and the rebels promising to shell and destroy every ship in Boston harbor cutting off the escape route the loyalist forces came to their sense and departed Boston bound for Nova Scotia never to return.

Excluding the reign of his honor mayor Curley and the occasional visits by Little Richard, Elvis, and James Brown. Boston has remained largely free of Royalty.

That is until 12/12/08 when a knew King of Taxis aptly named the "METRO KING" entered the city limits of Boston to snatch the princely crown being left by the soon to abdicate Ford Crown Victoria Police interceptor and wear it like an emperor.

The Newly revised set of Boston taxi regulations issued 8/29/08 requires that all replacement vehicles for Boston Licensed taxi be clean air vehicles except in the case that a car is wheel chair accessible. It became quickly evident that these newly mandated clean air vehicles would be hard to find, expensive to purchase and according to many industry leaders like Edward M. Kempner "wouldn`t last 3 years". There seemed to be no compromise ,Boston Taxi operators were going to have to purchase smallish battery operated vehicles that some say cause more pollution in the long run then they prevent and worse yet the manufacturers themselves state were never even considered for use as a taxi. Despair from Despotism seemed to loom over the Commonwealth for the first time in 232 years.

I first heard of this stately vehicle from Andrew Herbert when he asked me to look into the car and review it as a story I had been working on about purpose built taxis. I checked out the company website and was impressed by the design of the vehicle and its claim "Any car can be a cab but, only the Metro King is meant to be a taxi. I sent messages to the company requesting more information and was contacted by John Barchella and Michael ______ the proprietor and inventor of Metro King motors , head quartered in Poughkeepsie NY .

They told me that not only would they like to work with me on the story they would love to make the drive up the pike and show it to me and also asked about submitting the car for approval to the Boston Police Hackney Carriage unit. I referred them to Capt. Robert Ciccolo at BPD who gave them an appointment and seemed mildly excited about seeing the vehicle.

I have to admit as I pulled up to South Station to meet Mr. Barchella and escort him to Boston Police Headquarters I was taken back at the look of it... it seemed to be a calamity of Truck Bus car and taxi all mashed together and painted that horrible shade of "baby puke" yellow New York city seems so fond of , as I began to get out of the car to greet Mr. Barchella I noticed he was sporting a Yankee hat and immediately turned to my girlfriend to inform her "I Would be ditching his man in an hour" the last thing I was going to do was drive around with a Yankee fan all day. She hurriedly hushed me and encouraged me to keep an open mind as we both got out to look at the car.

Mr. Barchella walked us through the tour of the car emphasizing the detail to simplicity and function that had gone into the design. By the time the tour culminated with him pointing out that the fuel pump could be removed and swapped out in roughly 20 minutes without dropping the entire fuel tank out of the vehicle I was sold Lock stock and barrel. I may have muttered something like " its like someone listened to me complain" that made my new Yankee fan Pal "John" offered me the keys for the ride over to Schroeder Plaza.

Upon arrival we found a space on the cab stand outside headquarters (usually a good omen) and I Went inside to announce our presence. The clerk manning the Hackney desk went to inform Capt. Ciccolo of our arrival and when he appeared from the back the smile on his face had the usual effect of making me blurt out exactly what was on my mind " This thing is great I want one with a snow plow! " The captain summoned the city`s transportation commissioner Mark Cohen and we all went outside to check out the car as I experienced my second royal demo of the day.

Mr. Cohen and Capt. Ciccolo both seemed enthused as the regulatory concerns they were asking were rapidly being answered by John we all adjourned to Mr. Cohen`s office and there John layed out all the documentation he had brought with him from Poughkeepsie outlining the various crash tests and other perfunctory testing the Metro King had gone through and passed with flying colors. The more John spoke the more I thought about how great it would be to be driving a Metro King around Southie on a Saturday night collecting $6.00 Van fees all night.

My day dream was momentarily shattered when Capt. Ciccolo asked the price of the vehicle and the three of us seemed to gasp all at once. Did I hear him right? $49,000 the three of us barely managed to hear John finish by telling us about the 100% financing they could arrange and the left over "brand new" 2007 first production units they had to offer for $27,000.

When the sticker shock began to wear off for us Capt. Ciccolo asked me what I thought the selling points of the vehicle would be and I offered that the ability to take 6 passengers earning extra money and the design and ability to recycle most of the vehicle into the next unit would be a hook for owners. I even broke the cardinal rule of cabbbies by saying I would be willing to pay extra on a shift rental to drive such a wonderful vehicle. We departed Schroeder plaza with a verbal statement from hackney that if Mr. Barchella found a buyer for the vehicle they would almost certainly allow it to be used in Boston. They even went so far as to agree that an owner of a non Wav Medallion could use a Metro King instead of purchasing a hybrid as this would add additional capacity to Boston`s WAV fleet. When pressed Mr. Cohen agreed that they would allow one of the "brand new" 2007 left over units , if Mr.Barchella found a buyer.

As we departed smiling and waving goodbye I thought back to a conversation I overhead at this past years rate increase hearing where in reference to these 2 agreeable gentleman a fleet owner said " There goes 2 guys who could find fault with a sunny day"

Although I had only initially volunteered to escort Mr. Barchella to police headquarters and later planned to ditch him for being a Yanks fan I now volunteered to drive him around to some Fleet garages to gauge the industry reaction to our new King.

As we departed BPD I put the Metro King through the only handling test every cabbie would understand. It made that first U turn on Columbus ave to reverse direction and head back to Melnea Cass in one shot without having to back up.

Our first stop was at C&L aka John Byda`s garage. Mr. Byda (my third demo) loved the design look and function of the vehicle and I had now begin to parrot everything John said in some surreal attempt to translate what he was saying into the proper accent but after Mr. Barchella informed him of the cost of the unit he genuinely seemed to lose interest and I realized how hard this was going to be to convince owners who fought against $27,000 cars to purchase a vehicle with a $49,000 sticker price no matter how much better of a car it is. Mr. Byda thanked us for coming by and wished us luck but, had no interest in being the first cab owner in Boston to deploy the King.

I ,with my Yankees fan * COUGH* friend in tow, mushed onward to the U.S.A. garage to see George Summers. I already knew that George did not operate any WAV medallions but lets be honest can you really do anything in Boston without getting feedback from Industry leaders like George?

Upon entering the garage Mr. Summers greeted me as he always does "hello there young fella what can I do for you?" I told Mr. Summers why I had come and he ventured outside with enthusiasm ,withing minutes, every driver and mechanic in the Garage was crowded around the vehicle listening to John sing its praises as I again attempted my translation.

Everyone was happy and smiling again until.... yup you guessed it John said the price. The mechanics and drivers ran like we were asking for free rides and oil changes and Mr. Summers departed with the gentleman like offering to John of " I thank you for coming to show this to me I am happy someone built a car designed to be a cab but, I just don`t think it fits my needs".

This same set of events played itself out again and again as we spent the rest of the day bouncing our way around the HUB trying to find a taxi operator that saw this car was worth the extra money. On one of our stops at Patriot transportation one of Boston`s largest and busiest companies on the North Shore the managing partner Randy Raduazzo went so far as to say "it really is a nice vehicle that fits all of my needs but, I can`t justify spending $49,000 on it when I could buy 10 used police cars for that price. Revere taxis are not yet subject to the clean air requirement.

The warmest reception that we seemed to have all day was at the E.J.T. garage . We managed to stumble in and disrupt the Christmas party but, the entire Tutunjian Family enthusiastically listened to the Demo watched as Edward Tutunjian took it on a short test drive and had his chief mechanic place the car on a lift to check out the mechanics. Mr. Tutunjian was the only one we spoke to all day that seemed to understand that the price could be brought down significantly if production were increased. He thanked us for coming by even though we had rudely interrupted the family`s holiday festivities, he seemed not to care and came off as genuinely interested when he wished us a farewell and Merry Christmas promising to stay in touch with John.

By now the hour had grown long and Mr. Barchella had to be getting on his way back to Poughkeepsie, after a quick stop at the Pool at Logan that fast became too cold to maintain we decided to give up for the day and my new(and only) Yankee fan friend John journied to my house to pick up my car so he could follow me back to the turnpike entrance. As we pulled into my parking lot I took note that the digital mileage trip read 232.9 miles and there was between a quarter and a half left in the tank.

I got into my personal Crown Victoria and roared my princely carriage to life. The am/fm radio came to life in Stephen king like fashion and I heard "I love my car" that horrible buble gum pop song from the same guys that wrote "I`m too sexy" I angrily shut off the radio driving the short distance to the Pike in silence.

As I watched John and the Metro King disappear into the Ted Williams tunnel my heart sank and I chuckled while thinking

"God save the King!"

Well? Can you?

Aside from "Stick `em up" this simple question may contain the 4 most hated words in the Boston taxi industry. As evidenced by Boston`s new Cattle car setup on the MBTA Red line the recent ,and hopefully short lived, downturn in the world economy has consumers as well as providers in all sectors of transportation struggling to find ways to maximize the amount of people transported for their dollar.

Even though an exemption from fines has long allowed passengers and drivers of Boston taxis to ride restraint free, Concerns over liability from not providing a seat belt to a customer who more then likely would have neglected to wear it anyway has drivers all over the Hub refusing to take the risk and losing jobs to other drivers who are willing to risk passenger safety in exchange for a typical bribe of $5.00 over the meter plus tip.

The wide sweeping August 2008 "Rule 403" , issued by the Boston Police departments hackney carriage unit covers everything from what a driver wears to the minimum height a doors unlock post can be but it says little about seat belt requirements. On a slightly comical note it does declare that :

aa. Seating:

i. Only the Hackney Carriage Driver may occupy the Driver’s seat while the
Hackney Carriage is in motion.

Rule 403 did more then spell out drivers seat occupancy ,to the relief of gas poor drivers everywhere it requires that all replacement vehicles for use as taxis in the city of Boston must be brand new with factory white paint jobs producing less emissions then the used V8 cop cars now in use.

This has left only a small number of extremely expensive , hard to get replacement vehicles that don`t seem to come close to being able to take 5 safely.

"You can barely get 3 fat people in it never mind 4 and although I never took 5 in the vics I can`t help but, laugh when people ask now" said one shift driver piloting a 2007 Camry Hybrid in the Boston Cab association. He also added that he missed out on at least 2 flat rate jobs from Logan due to the inability to carry 4 passengers with excessive luggage.

At the request of RVM publisher Andrew Herbert I set out to find a vehicle that would meet the tough standards of the Boston Police Hackney carriage unit and also meet the obvious need of today`s tough economy to transport 5 passengers.

After an exhaustive search I was only able to find a few vehicles available to purchase today that meet these needs.

equipped with the optional third row seat would be more then acceptable but far from cheap as this configuration weighs in at around $40,000 after the vehicle is acquired from Toyota with the third row seating option and then converted to a taxi with installation of vinyl seating ,proper lighting, association colors , meter and safety partition. This of course does not include any other options you were thinking of such as rear passenger climate control , sun roofs etc.
This just may be an insane amount of money to spend on one vehicle with a maximum lifespan of 7 years.

The Metro King

The brand New Metro King is the first Purpose built Taxi cab to enter production in the united states since the end of the checker mogul in 1982. I recently had the opportunity to test drive one and show it off to prominent members of the Massachusetts transportation industry and am thoroughly impressed. Although the Metro King is not currently designated a clean air taxi it is fully functional as a wheel chair accessible vehicle and therefore would theoretically currently be exempt from that requirement. Other features that come standard in this innovative vehicle are Standard auxiliary air conditioning for rear passenger Compartment , Fully compliant with ADA regulations , full time wheelchair side door access design that is thought to be safer then the rear entry only lift designs and does not compromise normal passenger carrying capabilities. Moreover the ramp system has no electric or hydraulic moving parts like other severely limiting any possible break down of the equipment. More than twice the luggage capacity of a normal cab.

Perhaps the most impressive feature the Metro King has to offer is the unique transferable passenger module for use on successive chassis. Since the vehicle is built onto existing Chevrolet Colorado pick up trucks the entire rear of the vehicle including all Lighting and safety equipment is designed to be recycled into the next vehicle when the first one meets its regulated 5 or 6 year life span. Furthermore because it has been placed on a GM pickup you get a nationwide network of dealerships stocked with parts eager to work on your vehicle and honor the 5 year 100,000 mile manufacturers warranty, when that warranty expires you have a vehicle that mechanics everywhere, unlike Toyota Hybrids, are extremely familiar with and lets not forget the endless supply of OEM and after market parts available for Chevy Pickups at any Auto Parts supplier in the country.

Michael _______ and John Barachella from Metro King motors also have assured me they are working to make the Metro King fully compliant with clean air laws by incorporating what they call ___________ a system which immediately stops and then starts the vehicles engine when triggered by a device linking the breaking system with the trucks emissions computer.

Although this is not part of Metro Kings first limited production units available for sale and use now it is expected to be fully incorporated into future models and may also be available as an after market add on in previous models greatly reducing emissions. Metro King is also considering the possibility that the vehicle could be brought into line with the much touted "Pickens energy plan" and converted to run on either Propane or Compressed natural gas further reducing emissions and dependence on foreign oil. The remaining inventory of Metro King`s first production run of 2007 models are available for the bargain price of $28,000 and thus far have been tentatively approved for use by Hackney.

In closing, it must be painfully obvious that although the new clean air taxi regulations forced upon the industry by the city of Boston have been causing serious difficulties for us all it must also be crystal clear that there is a glaring opportunity here to improve safety as well as service for our customers. At the end of the day every member of the industry from the 400 cab fleet owner to the lowly shift driver(as well as enforcement personell) entered this business to earn a living by ensuring that taxi customers are safely and expertly delivered to their desired destinations.

Revenue for social netwroking sites have dipped slightly... all the way down to an estimate of 250 million for facebook.com and 585 million for Myspace. Even though the net 2.0 social networking bonanza seems to be coming to an end sites like this have made a boat load of money.

I could have been the captain of that boat and it flat out sailed without me even noticing. In 1995 I began working for Boston`s largest locally owned security company, the now Barton owned Security Systems inc.

The Internet boom had just begun and everywhere you looked there was millions of dollars being thrown at ideas like http://pets.com
Every college kid you met on the Subway was studying "computer science" .People were taking second mortgages to set up server farms in their newly built South Boston condos and fortunes were spent on something as simple as a name. I personally profited on the sale of 2 adult themed domain names and when I bragged to friends about it they laughed that I didn`t sell high enough.

In early 1997 Security systems promoted me to work at their newly acquired Harvard University accounts. Harvard had just decided that their in house security staff were no longer economically feasible to operate and decided to go with an outside contractor in the hopes of saving money and insulating itself from Law suits that were becoming far too common.

One former Harvard employed guard actually managed to get a judgment of about 2 million against the university for discrimination.

Anyway lets move on to how I missed the opportunity of a lifetime...

The Harvard university graduate school of Design (GSD) just might be one of the most poorly designed buildings in the world in terms of security. I know that vast improvements have been made now but at the time there were daily incidents of stolen bikes, cd players , and one incident I can recall involved a very expensive set of golf clubs being stolen from a faculty office.
There was little or no access control to the building so once someone entered they were free to roam around and fill their pockets. The nearby high school (Cambridge R&L) seemed to provide an endless supply of thrill seeking teenagers eager to test the boundaries of the university. Since the security staff at the school were mostly new employees the building management (Kevin ,Sue and John) devised an easy solution for the building staff to ascertain who should be allowed in the building and who should not. They put together a kind of yearbook with a picture gleamed from the Harvard ID database and short bio about the person. There was a special name for it that I Can`t recall but over time it came to be known as "the face book" the name caught on widely and it was not all that uncommon, early on ,for a seldom seen student or staff member to exclaim "I`m in the face book" when a guard challenged their presence in a particular area of the building.

I am sure you that given the times we were living in, to not see what was such a glaring opportunity to make a fortune and lead the life of a semi retired sports franchise owner is the purest example of stupidity ever.

There is not one day that goes by that I don`t sit and think about how I missed what Mr. Mark Zuckerberg so easily saw.

I can`t feel too badly though. Not only did I miss it but, everyone whose picture was ever in that original facebook missed it too... I wonder if they still have it?

Logan Airport Taxi rides (Boston,Massachusetts) to be taxed 95% 617-284-5005 Boston`s Best Taxi Cab company

By now you more then likely have heard that the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has decided it has yet to piss away enough money on police details, bloated pensions, bloated pay and unnecessary construction projects. They need more money and they need it now! How are they going to get it? By gypping everyone foolish enough to come visit our fine city out of $11.25.

Since I am employed as a lowly Boston Cabbie and this change is guaranteed to have a negative outcome on my personal income I decided to run some test fares to see what the proposed toll hike would look like on a Taxi meter.

I started out at Logan airport Terminal E (international terminal)and started the meter heading for the Long Wharf Marriott hotel via the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Upon arrival the meter totaled $25.85 (14.60 meter charge 9.00 Ted Williams tunnel 2.25 Massport Ground Transportation unit fee). I have never been a math genius,hence the illustrious career, but I believe this is a 77% tax on a cab ride isn`t it?

While on the way to the Long Wharf I took the time to note what the meter was while at the Seaport hotel. You know that hotel right? Smack dab in the middle of the multi million dollar project the city and state of Massachusetts have dumped millions into developing? Convention centers Art museums New hotels and they even have their very own brand spanking new Beer Garden.

Well to get from the Airport to this shiny new face of the Commonwealth it costs $23.05 (11.80 plus 9 TWT+ 2.25) 95% direct tax. Welcome to Massachusetts the state that has a 95% tax on what is probably the first purchase a person makes when arriving in Boston. Why not just radio the pilots and tell them to land at Manchester/Providence from now on instead?

I have a better Idea.. Make the toll and even 12 bux! Ya thats right you heard me raise it even higher!

You see I ran another trip from that spot at terminal E to the Long Wharf Marriott and this time I avoided the tunnels all together and went through Chelsea Everett Sommerville and Charlestown to get there. Must have been a fortune right? WRONG going this way made the trip a total of $29.25 (27 on meter and $2.25 GTU)

You see the newly revised rule 403 handed down from the Boston Police Hackney carriage unit on Aug. 29 2008 clearly states that any licensed driver of a Boston Hackney carriage must endeavor to carry customers on the cheapest way possible to their destination.

If they just made that tolls a little higher I could go through 3 separate cities cross over the Msytic river twice for less money and get to keep it all depriving the state of any tax revenue....and it would be 100% legal!

So please oh please Mr. Turnpike Authority I quintuple [censored] dog dare you to raise it even higher! Didn`t these [censored] ever read ANY Adam Smith ?

I was going to post this but, Decided against it. Someone should read it though and I chose you.

As some of you may know from previous posts I used to live in Dorchester on the South Boston line.

Back in May Mrs. Cabbie and I moved to a wonderful apartment in a quiet north shore suburb. Thus far we have loved living here. Even though we are wedged against Logan airport. It is astoundingly quiet. At least compared to Southie/Dorchester it is quiet anyway.

When we initially looked at the Apartment the landlord mentioned several times that we were to have complete use of the Back Yard and repeatedly referred to an area under her back porch that would specifically be for us.

Considering we were moving from a three bedroom into a 1 bedroom this wound up being the deciding factor in taking such a small place.

When we moved in we got a welcome package of brochures from the Town. One boring night when none of my fellow R&R posters had anything entertaining to contribute I read through this pile of community propaganda and paid special attention to the Brochure the Town had chosen to circulate regarding recycling. Although I found it ironic that a town would print and circulate an entire brochure regarding the importance of recycling, it convinced me.

The second I put down that brochure I decided I would fervently pursue a greener lifestyle. After all at the time I was spending numerous hours trying to convince members of Boston`s Taxi community as well as Federal State and local Government agencies to mandate that all future vehicle purchases be Hybrids.

In addition to the normal things that need to be recycled I happen to have a soul crushing addiction to diet Soda (Diet coke diet mountain dew and diet root beer in that order). Seriously I drink a minimum of three 2 liter bottles of this stuff daily. I know I know kidney failure if I don`t die of Lung cancer first.

The first week I recycled I simply put the bottles out with the rest of the trash and recycling. I actually remember thinking as I placed the bin down

" Maybe some poor person will use it to buy gas".

20 minutes later ,on the way to buy more diet coke ,I found that someone had already scooped up my bucket full of nickels and had the follow up thought "Christ on a cross I should have cashed them in , every little bit counts"

As the weeks passed and the recycle bin became full I would place the bottles into bags and put them on the side of the house that I could not see from my little under the porch patio area I had so proudly paved with recycled bricks from Craigslist.

One day just after my neighbors had what they had told us was their annual Labor Day BBQ I was called over to the fence separating the 2 properties by the eldest member of the neighbors family who informed me with the demeanor of a Middle Principal (complete with finger shaking ) that we had embarrassed them at their annual event. She further explained that they had been having that event for at least 20 years and that almost all of their guests had commented on how unsightly the bottles in the bags as well as the other recycle bins which I had so inconsiderately placed facing their property looked.

This lovely woman's advanced age as well as the over abundance of Blood in my diet coke stream so early on a Tuesday afternoon prevented me from saying what was running through my head as she gave me a good dressing down.

"Hey honey in the 900 years you and your family have lived here how come you never fixed this old ass rusty chain link fence when the rest of the fence is a solid wood picket can`t see my recycle bins fence"

Thank the Lord I did not say what was on my mind rudeness,especially directed to ones elders, is deplorable and as you my friends know all too well. I always ask myself What would Jesus do? before taking action. Also , I did consider that yes they did look crappy and I would probably not want to look at them either.

I then moved them further away from their house fully under the porch into my little piece of outdoors. Weeks passed and I heard no more about the unsightlyness of my bottles until the weekend before last..

Returning from work late one night I found a borderline Irate message from my lovely landlord explaining that she had taken a walk through the back yard and wanted to let us know that she agreed with the neighbors.

Our recycle bins were unsightly and if we could do a better job of things she would appreciate it. I responded by cashing in the three trash bags I had accumulated already and writing a lovely had written note to my landlord profusely apologizing for having been any trouble promising to do better and asking for specific directions on how we should conduct our recycling so as not to offend anyone.

She responded by saying we should " just make an effort to keep it a little more tidy and cash it in faster" I vowed to continue my green living and keep everyone happy.

A couple of more weeks went by and at this point I had three house hold trash bags packed tightly with 2 liter bottles. Mrs Cabbie went to bring the Landlord the rent last night (our rent cycles on the 15th).

The landlord again explained to Mrs. Cabbie that the neighbors had again complained about the unsightliness of our recycle bins and that we would need to do a better job. While discussing this she said to Mrs. Cabbie "Why don`t you just put them out front and let someone else take them or if you really want the money why not buy a special bin with a cover"?

As soon as Mrs. Webcabbie related this to be I then and there resolved that there would be NO MORE RECYCLING!

Not only will I not recycle and cash in the bottles I am going to do everything I can to make sure no one else does either. Every time I finish a bottle I will immediately remove the label and dispose of it ensuring even if someone searched through my trash to find the bottles there would be no bar code and as a result no nickel. I will then crush the bottle refasten the lid and jam it as far down into the trash bag as I can.

In my spare time I shall now walk around the neighborhood kicking over recycle bins and laugh like a mad man!

FUCK YOU FUCK THE PLANET AND FUCK SARAH PALIN TOO!

Shift drivers to purchase Boston Hybrid Taxi cab fleet, still have no equity in business.

This past Saturday afternoon I awoke to the joy full sound of Mrs. Webcabbie`s voice informing me that Boston`s long anticipated meter rate increase had finally been approved by mayor Menino.

I was so excited by this news I lept from my bedroom and grabbed the telephone with the hurried quickness of a cabbie loading the luggage of a customer on the way to the Hampton Inn in Revere.

I frantically dialed Arthur Rose hoping to get the truth and was disappointed to get his voice mail. I listened as Arthur`s recording assured me this business was very important to him and left a message that must have sounded something like "arthuritscartercallmeIwannaknowwhatsup" and began searching the phone book for someone else that should be awake this early in the afternoon and knows whats up.

I then dialed Andy Herbert and asked what was happening. Andy informed me that yes the rate hike had been approved by the mayor and police commissioner, who used the opportunity to usher in an entirely new set of regulations geared toward bringing the Boston Taxi industry into the 21`st century. Andy promised me he would send over the attachment the Boston Police had sent out. Still feeling gleeful I readied myself for a profitable weekend and headed out the door. The usual 15 minute walk to pick up the taxi only took 9 minutes and felt half as long.

The weekend began to pass as it always passes. Customers in and out of the taxi, smiles,good tips,bad tips, the occasional nogo, even with the usual weekend aggravation it turned out to be the best Friday I had in a long time. Not, because of the newly arrived crop of college freshmen with pockets full of summer job money and mommy`s credit card.

This weekend I had a smile on my face knowing the sign holding and letter writing I and other concerned drivers like me had done finally paid off! I would be getting a raise just as soon as I could find a meter reprogramming line short enough to wait in.

By Sunday evening I had received a copy of the 53 page attachment Andy had promised and headed right to the ITOA to wait in the 2 hour line to have my meter reprogrammed. As I sat waiting at the corner of Herald and Harrison avenue I began to read this massive codex from Boston`s powers that be and the smile on my face grew. It seemed as if for once someone listened to my big mouth.

No more would a cabbie have to sit unpaid for endless hours in the corner of a dungeon like taxi garage watching a broken television praying their cab would soon be fixed.

No more would a cabbie be afraid to refuse to pay insurance.

No more would a cabbie have to pay 10% on voucher , credit card tolls & gratuity.

By the time I hit page 11 and read that the single owner operator that cheated me out of 3 hours on a shift I paid upfront for ,(you know the type home in Winthrop summer home on the cape and can`t find the money for shocks or a new manifold)would be required to go out and buy a $28,000 car ,I was wildly banging the inner roof of the car screaming "YES"!

As I reached the corner of Albany and Herald in the taxi and page 51 in the codex the joy I had been feeling all drained out my big right toe.

I suddenly envisioned a labor day BBQ attended by Eddie Kempner , Robert Raimondi , George Tutunjian ,Anthony Ilacqua and all the other Multi Millionaire, Fleet owners in the city sipping Crystal and feasting on caviar. Laughing hysterically patting themselves on the back at their extremely good fortune.

No one who attended the hearing I spoke out at had seemed to listen. Had they all been in the bathroom? Was there a fix? The new shift rate increases ,to the best of my understanding, allow a tin owner to charge $ 8,840 a year per 12 hr. shift extra. 2 shifts a day this comes out to $17,680 on top of the $56,210 they would normally collect for 2, 12 hour shifts a day. This brings the yearly gross for 1 taxi to $73,890.00. Now add in that most of these men will have the gaul to charge an insurance collision waiver for an extra $6.00 a day or another $2,190.00 a year. This all boils down to a fleet garage with 30 cabs grossing $2,282,400.00 Not a bad living for taking the long trip to the ITOA to pick the envelopes up!

In closing , the Mayors decision to allow Rich fleet owners to pass on the entire cost of a Hybrid taxi fleet to the lowly shift driver is yet another win for Boston`s suburban elite and loss for the inner city working poor all done in the new elitist language of "Green living".

Greetings Lt. Ciccolo,

I am not sure if you will remember me but, My name is Webcabbie and I attended one of the taxi community meetings with you the Week of July 18`th 2007.

Mouthy guy always works Southie thinks cabbies that work Logan are Dumber then Dumb.

I would like to thank you for all you have done thus far in your position to bring some semblance of respect to Boston Cabbies and the Industry as a whole. If I could find any fault with you at all it would be to say that you seem to have far too much sympathy for the Millionaire Cab owners of our city. You must realize by now that this group of Ladies and Gentlemen will never cease complaining about the rising cost of their operating expenses. I implore you to remember the following every time they come to you asking for an increase in rent from the Drivers of our city.

1) They knew what they were getting into when they bought the Medallion.

2) If they did not want a business with high insurance and the risk of Motor Vehicle crashes They should have purchased Liquor/convenience stores.

3) While I ,and others like me, are out at 3 AM. risking our lives to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and provide for our families , most of these people are home all nice and tucked into bed dreaming of the money they are making.

4) No matter what they say there is always a plethora of drivers. The cars almost never stop moving...or at least are always being rented I`ll be fair and estimate average daily gross at $110.00 this comes out to $40,150 dollars per year. Now subtract 15,000 for insurance repairs and other expenses and it`s not bad for picking up envelopes no?

Ok Sorry for starting my ranting so early in this letter, on with my Idea to Resolve the Top Light issue....

First I`ll say this is a Fabulous Idea! I have long dreamed of a day when Drunk people no longer Jumped in front of my car,arms flailing wildly , forcing me to put Newton`s laws of gravity to the test trying not to hit them.

That said ,being a native of the Commonwealth, I am all too familiar how we can take a great idea and pardon my language fuck it all up. One need only look to the big dig and the latest fiasco with the Taxi transponder as proof. I did some extensive research...... o.k. I posted a request to a taxi group I belong to on yahoo.com asking what systems were in place in other parts of the globe. I got numerous responses.

Most everywhere in the world there is just a Top Light towards the front of the vehicle that either says "taxi" or "for hire".

While I think this would be great I know cab owners and if whatever new system the city decides upon costs them more then a one time expenditure of $10.00 they are going to lobby you for a $5.00 shift increase. I hope you are smiling, although I want this to be humorous, you must realize there is truth there.

By now you must be dieing to know what my great Idea is...here goes....

In Toronto they have an "Amber" colored light on the passenger side of the Dashboard that illuminates when the meter is activated. The lights are available from multiple manufacturers/suppliers and retail for less then $ 10.00 .

I would like to adjust this slightly and have the light come on when the meter is off and the Taxi is seemingly available. This would serve to immediately inform the public that the approaching taxi is in fact a Boston Licensed Taxi and not one from the suburbs.

Attached to this e-mail you will find some pictures a fellow Cabbie up in Toronto took of these lights mounted to a Chrysler. This should give you a better Idea of what I am shooting for. The following is a list of positive points , as far as I can tell, that this system offers.

1) It`s Cheap/Easy to install. As I have stated above the lights in use in Toronto are available from multiple suppliers and can easily be hooked to existing Taxi meters (they use the same brands of meters in Toronto).

2)Could also easily interface with the Metro/Tutunjian dispatch systems. If the output ports on those meters are taken it would be nothing to install a toggle switch for the driver to switch the light on when he is available for work. Keep in mind this light will be on the far right hand corner of the drivers field of vision (FYI the Toronto drivers swear they don`t notice it at all and it must be true if it were unsafe...its Canada they wouldn't have it).

3) We , as you know, have a huge problem with the Out of town cabbies pilfering our work. This Amber light would kill 2 birds with one stone and immediately inform the riding public weather or not a Cab is a licensed Boston Hackney Carriage. Perhaps the city and the industry could cough up some money for a small ad campaign...I`m sure MADD would kick in a few dollars also. I feel bad writing that, when I first began driving I drove in Revere. The fine was only 50.00 at the time and you couldn't`find a police officer that knew it or cared. I was here all night every night.

4) Since this system would be mounted to the interior of the vehicle it would not interfere with any of the various Top Lights and advertising already in use.

I sincerely believe of all known Taxi availability indicator systems world wide this one would suit The city of Boston best! I think the next step would be to test this system. The geographical center of Boston is in Roxbury. Due north of the center we find the South End. This is not to be confused with South Boston, which lies directly east from the South End. North of the South End is East Boston and southwest of East Boston is the North End. Backbay was filled in years ago.

Basic Rules for Driving in Boston: (Subject to change at any time)
Boston is often acclaimed as the most exciting city in America in which to drive. Who would argue? Herewith, for newcomers and visitors, are a few basic rules of the road for driving in these parts:

* To obtain a general idea of how to drive in Boston, go to a Celtics game and carefully watch the fast break. Then get behind the wheel of your car and practice it.
* Never take a green light at face value. Always look right and left before proceeding.
* When in doubt, accelerate.
* Very generally speaking, the intransigence of the Boston driver is directly proportional to the expense of his American-made car, and inversely proportional to the expense of his foreign-made car. But in applying this formula, bear in mind that they are all more or less intransigent.
* When on a one way street, stay to the right to allow traffic to pass coming the other direction.
* Drivers whose cars sport "I Brake For Animals" bumper stickers may brake for animals, but they may not brake for you. Watch it.
* Teenage drivers believe they are immortal. Don't yield to the temptation to teach them otherwise.
* Taxicabs should always be given the right of way, unless you are bent on suicide.
* Never, ever, stop for a pedestrian unless he flings himself under the wheels of your car. Most multicar pileups are caused this way.
* The first parking space you see will be the last parking space you see. Grab it.
* Learn to swerve abruptly. Boston is the home of slalom driving, thanks to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, which puts potholes in key locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them on their toes.
* Never get in the way of a car that needs extensive body work.
* Double-park in the North End of Boston, unless triple-parking is available.
* Always look both ways when running a red light.
* While it is possible to fit a 15-foot car into a 15-foot parking space, it is seldom possible to fit a 16-foot car into a 15-foot parking space. Sad but true. Don't even think of finding a 20 ft space.
* There is no such thing as a shortcut during rush-hour traffic in Boston.
* Rush 'Hour' generally only lasts from 7am until 8pm.
* It is traditional in Boston to honk your horn at cars that don't move the instant the light changes. Color doesn't matter.
* Never put your faith in signs that purport to provide directions. They are put there to confuse people who don't know their way around the city. And to confuse those who do but are detoured by the Big Dig.
* Use extreme caution when pulling into breakdown lanes. Breakdown lanes are not for breaking down, but for speeding, especially during rush hour. Breakdown lanes may also end without warning causing traffic jams as people merge back in.
* Never use directional signals, since they only confound and distract other Boston drivers, who are not used to them.
* Similarly, never attempt to give hand signals. Boston drivers, unused to such courtesies, will think you are waving them on to pass you.
* The yellow light is not, as commonly supposed outside the Boston area, a signal to slow down. It is a warning to speed up and get through the intersection before the light turns red. As a result, yellow lights only light for a quarter of a second.
* Seeking eye contact with another driver revokes your right of way.
* Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. Sidewalks are optional.
* In making a left turn from the right lane, employ the element of surprise. That is, do it as suddenly as possible, so as to stun other drivers. Crossing entire 4 lane roads in one block always gains the respect and salutes.
* Speed limits are arbitrary figures posted only to make you feel guilty.
* Whenever possible, stop in the middle of a crosswalk to ensure inconveniencing as many pedestrians as possible.
* Remember that the goal of every Boston driver is to get there first, by whatever means necessary.
* Above all, keep moving.

A few weeks back I promised I would write a column entitled "the weekly Ejection Wrap-up" Where I would regale you, my dear reader , with entertaining stories of people who were asked to exit the vehicle forth with. Fortunately either the riding public was well behaved all month or my patience have grown more resilient and I went almost the entire Month of September without "streeting" anyone.

By now most of you ,who read my drivel, know that I take my own calls to come pick people up in the ghetto limo. The following is an account of one such call and my reasoning behind refusing these valued customers my superior service.

Sunday 9/23/07 approximately 8:00 p.m.

wring wring wring goes the batphone.

Caller: " Hi can we get a cab at 16 [redacted] st Dorchester? "

Me " Sure pal where can we take ya"

Caller : " We aren`t sure yet probably Downtown somewhere"

Me: " O.k. I`ll have the driver there in about 10 minutes"

Upon arrival @ the call I could see multiple persons through the front window of the house drinking. Nothing wrong with having some drinks on a Sunday but, if you call a cab keep an eye out for it between sips. After beeping once and seeing no one inside move I called the telephone number back and informed the people their cab had arrived.

At this point I see a guy holding a beer walk to the windows and say "[censored] he is here already "

Then the same guy came to the front porch and asked "buddy how many people can you squeeze in there?"

I respond " The law says I can`t take more then four but, I can squeeze 5 for you"

If you have never read anything I have written you can`t put more people in a car then you have seat belts for. I hardly ever brake this rule but, I did just get on the highway to come get these people and didn`t wanna leave empty handed.

The guy responds " We have six"

I say "I can`t do six I can get you another cab though "

The guy says " o.k. lets do that then" and quickly ducks back inside the house.

Now as I sat there listening to my 4.6 litre v8 engine burn 3 dollar a gallon gas I began to listen for a break in the 2 way radio traffic so I could request another cab. Before I can get in and speak to the dispatcher two things happen

1) a female who I will describe as "text book sexy" exits the Domicile and begins to come to my window. Lets call her Tits McGee

2) A car begins to come down the street behind me and I am on a one way with no place to pull to the curb (Christ I love Dorchester must be great for ambulances and fire trucks)!

Miss Mcgee now makes it to my window as the car behind me pulls inches from my bumper. This is usually a clear sign they are new to the city and have never seen a cab block a street before to pick up.

I roll down the window to Miss McGee sticking her best assets in my face and coyly asking " Is there anyway you could just take the 6 of us....."
I immediately cut her off and respond " Dear I already told the other guy I couldn`t I can get you another cab"

Tits " o.k. if you could do that it would be great" As I see another car approaching the one that`s already behind me I say " o.k. dear can you send 4 people out now"

Tits McGee unwisely said " We are not quite ready yet So, you will just have to go around the block"

Tits if you are reading this..... DEAL BREAKER BABY..... No matter how big your tits are....six passengers plus me is 7 people in a Crown Victoria... this aint the bus company honey. Next time volunteer to the man that answers the phone how many people you have and be honest most drivers wouldn`t have offered to take 5.

At this point I looked at Miss McGee and said " Dear you will just have to try your luck with another company have a good night" and drove off........

Minutes later as I was picking up someone on Dorchester Avenue the bat phone rang again..... it`s the dude with the beer " Hi we called for a cab @ 16 [redacted] and the driver wouldn`t take us and just drove away"

For some reason when I give my card to someone they still seem to think they are calling an actual cab company so I always just go with it.

Me all in one breath : " Ya buddy that guy is weird he said something about you wanting him to take six people refusing to take no for an answer and then wanting him to drive around the block in circles in an age of 3.00 dollar a gallon gasoline"

Guy with beer " ahh ahh welll can you send us 2 more cabs....."

Me: " I`m sorry sir I don`t think I will be able to do that for you tonight you see not many drivers want to go down to Dorchester and the few that do won`t go back to an address after another driver reports a problem can I offer you another phone number?" At this I get " sighhhhhh o.k. let me get a pen...."

My sincerest apologies to Tits McGee the guy with the beer and whatever the other four people at 16 [redacted] st were but,

JUST BECAUSE I AM IN A SERVICE INDUSTRY DOESN`T MEAN I WANTED TO BE YOUR [censored] SERVANT

Best of luck finding on demand transportation willing to come to a neighborhood affectionately referred to as " STAB AND KILL" that doesn`t mind driving in circles for free and taking 6 people. Shouldn`t be too hard you do have Tits McGee on your side.

As far as our business is concerned I have now saved your phone number as "DNA"

Yes it is possible to be asked to exit the taxi and find another one.

I try not to do it too much (I can put up with a decent amount of
shit for the right price) but there are times when it is just better
to end the ride there then put up with some ignorant Dooshbag for X
number of miles. Usually this happens more towards the end of the
month....I have never been able to tell if it`s because I am running
low on patience by then or if it is because only hardcore drunken
fucks still have money to get wasted at the end of the month......on
with the ejections....

EJECTION ONE
Sunday around 9:30 from the Ritz on Avery to Abe and Louies....

This guy didn`t even make it to the lights at Tremont and Avery. I
responded to the doormans whistle from the Ritz waited about 3
minutes outside when the door opened and a very tall man began to get
in the guy immediatley complained "Christ move the fuckin` seat up" I
respond " I would love to pal but, the bullet resistant shield is in
the way" this usually placates people but, this guy no....had to say
slurring "They wouldn`t let me take the gun on the plane..rdrr " Now
he is in and I ask where can I take ya buddy?" I get back Abe and
Louies Rock and Roll (yes he actually said rock and roll) WOOOOOOO
HHHHOOOOOOOOO!" and loudly thumped the cieling of the cab. This still
wasn`t enough to get ejected.

Sunday nights are slow so I am usually willing to put up with a
little more then usual. Now as I begin the 3 point/U-turn up towards
Tremont the guy says:

"what are we listening to hear some kind of Muslim bullshit" (I was
listening to the BBC on 90.9). Now I get aggravated and say "Do I
look like a Muslim to you ?" I get back "hatever man I pay you this
is my car turn on some MUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZIK MAN!" At this point I
decided that I really didn`t need the money that bad and asked the
man politely to exit the vehicle. People never wanna believe that the
ride is over when I insist it is and it took getting out of the car
and yelling for the door man at the Ritz to get this guy to say

"Well Fuck you Then ASSSSSHOLE" ! and get out of the car.

EJECTION TWO

Monday morning aprox. 12:50A.M. Banshee bar on Dorchester ave to Bar
in Quincy.

Four young Irish people probably over for the summer on the J-1.
Usually the "off the boat" Irish and Gays/Lesbians are the two best
groups of people to drive. Both groups almost always pay,tip and
refrain from fucking with me too badly. This group seemed to be the
exception to the rule. When they all piled in I said "Hi how ya doin`
tonight" and they immediatley responded "Quincy Quincy take us to
fuckin` Quincy" All smiles.... don`t say hello you fuckin ignorant
fucks!

I respond "Sure whereabouts in Quincy" I get back the name of a bar I
have never heard of So, I ask "Do ya know wherreabouts it is in
Quincy?"
I get " How do we know your the cab driver aren`t you supposed to
know cabbie...Mr. taxi man cabbie,,,,," O.K. I do know a shit load
of bars I have dropped you drunkin fucks at enough of them by now and
yes I am charged with knowing my way around the entire Mero Boston
Area but , if it was possible to memorize an up to date list of every
bar room and hotel and street in the commonwealth no one would need
to buy a gps system right fucktard? At this point we are stopped at
the traffic lights at the corner of Columbia rd. and Dorchester
avenue. Yes we are not even 100 feet into the ride. I grab the
microphone off the holder and wait patiently for the dispatcher to
stop talking so, I can ask him to ask the other 500 guys listening to
him if they have ever heard of this particular shithole. Just then I
hear the drunkinfuckinretard all the way to the right in the back
take one of my business cards and pass it to the guy behind me. He
then takes down another one and begins to read out loud from the card
and then says "fuckin spastic businesscard rdrr" at the same time he
finished this sentence the guy behind me took his business card that
the other guy had given him and crumbled it against the shield. The
light turned green I pulled into the gas station and asked them to
find another cab.

The young lady that had been sitting up front with me began to
protest and say they had done nothing wrong and demanded to speak
with my boss. As I sat there shaking my head saying "rides over" She
went on to say without taking a breath "That this was Shite and
absolute bollax and she had never met such an ignorant taxi man. I
wanted to say "Listen dooshbag you are a guest in my country and I
don`t have to put up with your bullshit and as far as my boss is
concerned I only answer to the Boston police ,my mother, and our lord
Jesus H. Christ! now shut up and get the fuck out!" Hownever, over
the years I have found it is most prudent when performing an ejection
to merely sit there shake your head and repeat "sorry rides over I
can`t help you tonight"

Anyway I plan on making this a regular column and will post it every
Monday afternoon following weekend ejections.

city about crime and the like. I check it daily and honestly make a
mental note of which streets seem to have the most violence and avoid
them whenever possible. Also, whichever police is maintaining this
site seems to have a healthy sense of humor as some of the posts tend
to make me bust a gut laughing. Did you hear about the guy that robbed
the bank in Government center and tried to get away in a cab? If you

Ever wonder what happens to the stuff you turn into the police that
doesn`t get picked up by it`s rightful owner? If you check out this
site you will see. This company collects property turned in & seized
by police departments from all across the country and auctions it off
to the highest bidder. everything from cell phones to cars can be had
at mostly discounted prices! Geek boy, Fitz and myself got some great
buys here this summer. Geekboy managed to get a solid 24 carat gold
wring weighing in at just under a half ounce for the paltry some of
62.85 including shipping. I got myself tons of new tools (those of you
that know me ,know my car always needs attention) for about half what
they cost retail at home depot or Sears. Now Fitz....listen to what he
got he bought himself an entire pallet of Grow lights hydroponic kits
and digital scales. I wonder just exactly what good ole fitzy plans to
do with those.....you guessed it grow Tomatoes...... the only bad
thing I can say about this site is that the only shipping option they
offer is FedEx ground. Some of you may know that Fedex isn`t always
the cheapest and is only good for smaller packages. Anything larger
then a breadbox needs to be picked up at propertyrooms "Distribution
centers" which are located in the four corners of the country(no
Boston location yet). Too bad I really wanted to bid on one of the
"Jaws of life" kits they were auctioning down in Florida but, that's a
long way to go in a taxi! Currently I am in a bidding war over a box
of cell phones...maybe I will get one of the 20 or so I dropped at
Schroder Plaza last winter?

I`m not sure if you guys have noticed but....gas is kind expensive
lately. Are you as sick of it as I am? Nothing we can do right ? Guess
again you can make your own gas for as low as .60 cents a gallon!
These friendly people at e85machines.com offer "Homebrew" still kits
to make your own Ethanol.....for an investment of around 1,000 bux
they will send you a pre-made still suitable to manufacture enough gas
to keep you moving in and out of the pool all day. I considered buying
one and mixing up my own Ethanol to use in the cab but, when I asked
my landlord if I could get one she freaked out and said if I opened a
still in my apartment she would throw me out....weird I know.... I
then tried to convince Robby from the Tudor garage to buy one and he
again reminded me that I am no longer allowed on the property and hung
up! I know one of you is reading this and thinking "Where are we gonna
get the corn to make Ethanol?" I thought that too and did some
research you can use almost any kind of plant material or even kitchen
garbage. I don`t know why Robby thought it was a bad Idea the Tudor
could set up the still in the front garage bay they hardly use and
have all the cabbies pick up the kitchen garbage from all over Southie
and the South End in the Cab make gas and sell it. Nothing strange
about that is there?

Ever wonder where those bootleg copies of the newest movies come from?
Check out this site and you will see that almost as soon as a new
movie hits the theatres the aptly named pirate bay has a copy available.
I`ve done some research on how these guys are getting away with
ripping off the movie companies scott free and as best I can tell its
because of 2 things 1) They are not located within the united states
and wherever they are its not illegal there. 2) They don`t actually
supply the software that physically downloads the movie to your
computer that you have to get somewhere else and these swell people
happily tell you where.
When Geekboy showed Fitzy and I this site , we immediately wanted to
bootleg our own videos and sell them in the cab. We enthusiastically
set about pursuing this new crusade and then..... Gary went and
ruined it for us by reminding us that 1) We are not too bright and
would probably get caught 2) We could risk the city taking away the
owners medallion when we were caught 3) The owner would then want to
murder us......anyway Gary being a constant Buzzkill
aside.....downloading Pirated Copyrighted material is ,sadly, illegal
and distributing it in the taxi is 5 kinds of illegal but if you
do.... I could use a good copy of the new Jason Bourne movie....

I know your shaking your head thinking I smoked Fitzy`s Tomatoes. Who
doesn't`t know about Google right?
Well google does a lot more then you think. Gone are the days of this
company being a stand alone search engine. Google now offers other
services like a complete home office software suite for around 50.00 a
year (similar software from Microsoft is around 500.00). Some other
great sections here are google translator. This has come in handy for
me when posting that I wanted shifts in 5 different languages at the
Taxi pool bulletin board. Make sure to check out the google patent
search data base. Google has compiled detailed information on Every
invention that ever received a patent from the U.S. patent office.
There are over 50 patents for new inventions to give out calls to cab
drivers. I guess i`m not the only one tired of hearing Linda scream at
us ? haha!

A Camry Hybrid Lease for under 400 a month??

I am in the unique position of being able to drive a
taxi only on the weekend. I am seeking out a lease on
a Toyota Camry Hybrid for under 400 a month on a 3-5
year lease.

I am only looking to put a 1,000 down. If any of you
out there have a friend at Toyota please let me know.

Why can`t a black man get a taxi ?

This past week someone posted this question on our
local http://craigslist.org bulletin board. This was
the reply that I posted back. I think if you read the
entire thing you will more then likely agree with my
thoughts.

Every time I pick up a Black person they are always so
shocked that I picked them up. 100 black guys just
drove by them and now I stop! ( I could easily pass as a member of the Hitler Youth).

Some things that make me keep driving regardless of
someones race creed or sexual orientation.

1) I go entirely on how people are dressed. If you
look like a thug regardless of color you just might be
a thug.... that hoodie is hiding your face for some
reason and I am all set with you being in my cab. On
the other side of the penny if you want to Rob rape
and kidnap a taxi driver put on a nice suit and call
from a specific address and don`t come out till we get
there, you won`t have a problem getting in to the
taxi.

2) If you are standing with more then 4 people I keep
driving! Even if you are all white wasps in
tuxedos...insurance regulations prevent us from
carrying more then 4 people...I am real tired of
having this conversation so I just keep driving.If you
think this sucks then I am with you pal! Please put
that college degree to good use and design a full size
sedan like mine that can carry six people safely and
have it get 20 miles a gallon on fuel that is only a
dollar a gallon.

3) Sometimes we are on a radio call or going to pick
up someone specific who called us directly. I have
many regular customers who want to ride with me if I
say "sorry I am taken" please accept this I am not
saying no because I dont like you or your shirt or
whatever else. I AM TAKEN! Every major American city
has a law that says if the top light on a taxi is on
that means it is open....

THIS IS NOT TRUE IN BOSTON THE FUCKING TOP LIGHT COMES

4) If you look exceptionally drunk or you are swaying
in the wind I may just keep driving. I have been in
your drunken shoes my friend and I know how squishy
they feel. I don't need to ad you to the list of passed
out customers I had to take to a police station to be
woken up or people who vomited in my car.

6) The follow events happen at least 5 times a week.
Black person gets in a taxi at say the corner of
Morton and Blue hill avenue. They didn`t call and they
were just standing on the corner. They get in and tell
the driver "Take me to Winthrop" Winthrop
Massachusetts? the driver says. and asks for money up
front. Contrary to popular belief we are legally able
to request front money. The person in the car refuses
or says the money is on the other end (your mom is
paying whatever). The diver then throws you out and
calls the taxi company gives them a description of
what you are wearing and your direction of travel and
says "She has no money" now every other taxi driver
who hears the taxi company announce your description
will just drive by you. You may actually have the
money. You may own 34 Mercedes Benz and a 4 million
dollar home in Nahant but....Chances are you are just
another person regardless of race creed or sexual
orientation who went out and had way too much to drink
way too much coke whatever... and now you have no
money to get home and thought
"I`ll just beat a cab" Not all of us are so dumb my
friend.

The last three words in my bible are "MONEY UP FRONT"

7) If you call from a house and I get there and you
are already waiting out front this is suspicious.
Everyone in Boston thinks they are king George and the
taxi company should call them when we arrive so they
can take an additional ten minutes to come out. I miss
the days when we could just beep and people came right
out. Some taxi companies want us to get out and wring
the bell...next I think they will have us offer shoe
tieing service. We will call as we come down the
street and then come in and help you put on your shoes
and find your keys. Also, if I get there and you come
out of the wrong house. I may just pull away. Could be
a simple mistake degenerate call taker at the taxi
company had one extra puff off the crack pipe on lunch
break and now she is writing down the wrong addresses.
Just to be sure I am safe I Drive off. The last guy
that got shot in Boston did not follow these
guidelines and he now shits his pants and can`t walk.
Driving a taxi is bad enough I don't want to wind up a
quad with a bullet in my spine now too.

What I am about to say really just sucks and is
indicative of a society in decline but, trust me when
I Say it works so don`t get pissed at me I have just
seen people do this.

FLAG THE CAB WITH THE MONEY WAVING IN YOUR HAND AND A
SMILE ON YOUR FACE!

Regardless of your race creed or sexual orientation
and the feeling you have that cabbies are racists A
guy who is smiling well dressed and has money in his
hand and doesn't look too fucking drunk will get a taxi.

The guy who is standing in the middle of the road with
four of his friends swaying in the breeze because of
that 9`th round of Jaeger bombs .....

Usually I can tell I have made the correct choice when

I know most of you hate me by now but I think I have a
valid input on U.S. gas consumption. I do spend about 200.00 a week on
gas. At least another 150.00 a week is spent by my day driver. Figure the average at 300 per week per cab and multiply that by the 1830 cabs in Boston alone and that is one big boat load of oil!

OK here is the idea....
I drive a 2001 Crown Vic as my taxi.

We bought it in 2003 from The Arizona Highway Patrol for around 4,500.The car now has over 300k on it runs great we would keep fixing it and get 2 more years out of it easily but the city has laws regarding how long a car can be a taxi. I Must retire this vehicle in September regardless of how many miles it has or how good it is running.

We can buy a newer Crown Vic ex cop car for around the same price in September. This obviously still leaves me spending 200.00 a week (probably more by then) and
keeps the demand at the same level.

Earlier this week I posted a rant about the Federal Reserve Police. I still don`t get why that one building needs a police force and I especially don`t
get why the fuck they need to drive around in a full size Ford Expedition. Where the fuck are they going ? Shouldn't`t they stay at the Federal Reserve? IF they
have to go somewhere why can`t they buy a Hybrid?

This is my point almost every single taxi company in the Boston area if not the entire country relies on retired government agency cars to use as taxis. Not that it matters but cars from federal agencies like the FBI is the best to buy they have the nicest interiors lowest mileage and are maintained the best.
Worst is to buy from a local police force like the BPD or NYPD.

If you all called your local representative and insisted that every state federal and local agency that needs a vehicle only bought Hybrid vehicles in a few years those Hybrids would trickle down to the cabbies. So within 5 years how much would that cut the US demand for gas? If such laws were in place then auto makers would automatically begin to build a Hybrid Crown Victoria or other suitable vehicle to be
a police car.

I know you are going to say they are not as fast right? How many people have been killed in police chases? To the best of my knowledge there are now regulations in place that says Mass staties are to break off a chase once they hit a certain speed limit unless the person they are pursuing committed a felony. I for one think police chases make for great television but I am just saying they really are not `t that good for our society.

There is no reasonable argument you could possibly
make to refute the following statement.

All Federal local and state agencies should only be
allowed to purchase a hybrid vehicle end of story!

Now getting back to me and my problems. I don`t want
to spend 200.00 a week on gas anymore. I need a new
car in September.

Here are my choices.

1) I buy another Crown Vic -no good

2) I buy one of the Crown Vic's that Run on Compressed
Natural Gas.
Although these cars are less expenses then the
conventional Crown Vic's they are harder to find and I
know of only one place I can fuel it. In addition to
that draw back the gas is really not any cheaper and
only holds 8 gallons Besides do you really want me
driving around with 8 gallons of Compressed natural
gas?

Ka BOOOOM!

3) I purchase a Toyota Camry Hybrid or Ford Escape
Hybrid.

This is going to cost me a hell of a lot more then
4500.00 IF I finance one then I have to get collision
Insurance. Basic Taxi Insurance is around 9,000 a year
Collision is almost double that. The only way this is
doable is if some nice reader buys me one. I know,
no chance of that!

So come September I will be forced to purchase Another
Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor Model that gets
about 12 miles a gallon and so will every other cabbie
in the state. The status Quo continues gas continues
to rise and we will all still be bitching about it
this same time next year.

This is the number for Our friends at the
Massachusetts state house. When the nice lady answers
the phone tell her you would like to be connected to
your reps office. She will ask you where you live and
then connect you. IF someone in your reps office
actually answers the phone tell them "you would like
your representative to immediately introduce
legislation that mandates all newly purchased
Massachusetts agency vehicles must be Powered by a
Hybrid Drive."

While your at it contact Deval Patrick our governor
who ran on a campaign of reform and tell him this is a
reform that is important to you because you know that
it will work. Basically tell him you want him to sell
the MOTHERFUCKING CADDIE and buy a hybrid! BE a wise
ass and say "together we can" When he is done with it
will go to a deserving cabbie somewhere in the
country. My friend has the Connecticut governors crown
Vic , the one that is in jail for corruption.

What the hell! Tell hem Big Daddy Cabbie told you to
call. This should get my hackney license revoked by
the weekend!

The rules as I know them are if you know the persons name and address you can go
to the police station and file a complaint. Then an order to appear is issued and
if the person does not show up a bench warrant can be issued and the next time
the person gets stopped by police they are held until the debt is they appear .
A Massachusetts judge can award you triple the damages. Since I have never been
"beat" for more then ten bux I usually just move on.

I was once beat for 3.85 the kid rook off running like he had just robbed a
bank. I laughed so hard I had to pull over and a guy got in and took me on a 50
dollar ride.

One job leads to another keep those wheels moving.

In Boston any driver may ask for front money if the job is leaving the city
limits.

However it is possible to get the meter over 25 bux going from one end of the
city to another. In these cases I ask the people for money up front. There are
always signs a person is up to no good.

1) I have found it is much better to go by how a person is dressed rather then
race etc.
Scummy people wear scummy clothes regardless of race.

2) If you get to an address and the people are already out front it is
suspicious nobody waits out front in Boston most of the taxi companies call them
out now.

3) they come out of the wrong house GET THE MONEY UP FRONT

4) they ask to change the destination while you are in route. GET THE MONEY
UP FRONT!

As far as carrying a weapon I usually have my lug wrench handy. Better to just
give up the money the car your pants whatever else they want all that stuff is
replaceable your life is not. Try to leave your cell phone in the car in case
you are hijacked the police can track your phone and the car. To the best of
my knowledge almost every city and town in Massachusetts has a special ordinance
that prevents Taxi drivers from carrying a firearm.

This is in The Boston Hackney rules and regulations handbook and is a question
on the test also.
